Ballet and hip-hop
was watching save the last dance with some friends last night and it sparked a conversation about finding ballet ‘boring’. I found it hard then to articulate my observation about young/old/excitement etc. Thought of a wee story this morning to express it so thought I’d write it down before i forget it.
An old man and a young man are sat by a lake. The lake is still at first glance, but the older man has noticed some water skaters on the surface. He is watching the small ripples they make and is chuckling to himself at their antics. Meanwhile the younger man grows bored so he picks up a stone and throws it into the lake. As part of this act he challenges himself, seeing how far he can throw the stone and he sits watching the resulting ripples – far larger than the small insects were making. The ripples disturb the insects that the older man was watching and he feels annoyed at the intrusion. The older man wonders why the younger man would do this and the younger man fails to see what it is he has done.
For me this allegory is two fold, the lake is probably almost any topic and shows the difference in observation between two generations, between two people with different appreciations of the same subject – master and student, interested party and passer by. I am quite often either the younger man or the older man depending on the subject (for ballet I bet I’m younger ;) ). The lake itself is also an analogy for the the minds of the individuals, only the still mind can observe small changes within ones consciousness… By the way – listening to limp bizkit and enigma while writing this – odd mix ;)

Seems like an interesting technology for those quick apps people constantly build spreadsheets for. Worth a further look.
